Michelle Obama Attends Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival in a Summery White Gown
Michelle Obama showed off her summer style during a special film festival appearance yesterday.
The former First Lady attended the opening night of the 2022 Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival (MVAAFF) alongside former President Barack Obama last night. The couple introduced a screening of their upcoming Netflix documentary Descendant, which follows descendants of the Clotilda’s last known slave ship to illegally bring captives from Africa to the US, per Variety.
The Becoming author chose an elevated-casual dress for the summer evening: a floaty white V-neck dress with loose three-quarter sleeves, a gathered tassel waist, a thigh-high slit, and a ruffled hem. She accessorized the floor-length piece with gold hoops and layered white and gold jewelry, while wearing her hair in a half-up, half-down style.
Descendant, which was picked up by the Obamas’ Higher Ground Productions after premiering at Sundance 2022, is set to premiere on Netflix later this year. The duo founded the production company in 2018, which has released projects including the docuseries Our Great National Parks and the food series Waffles + Mochi.
During the Friday night screening at the Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown, Massachusetts, both of the Obamas spoke on the importance of cultural sharing and community history with younger generations.
“What Descendant reminds us is, we have to tell our stories to our younger folks,” the former First Lady said. “We have to be the ones. We cannot follow that tradition of keeping our pain silent. Because what this film shows us is that our stories are the power that makes us seen.”
The former President added that one of the couple’s goals post-presidency was to emphasize “the importance of stories and who tell stories and what stories are valid and what stories are discounted. One of the powers of this festival and the work that the Rances have done is to lift up stories that too often have been lost in the flow of time. Because we believe that everybody’s stories matter.”
